Presentation 1: The Wellness-Informed Pathway: Ethics in Early Life Care and Lactation Practice (90 Minutes)

• Speaker: Dr. Darcia Narvaez, Ph.D, Professor Emerita of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame, Fellow of the American Psychological Association, American Educational Research Association and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
• Description: The wellness-informed pathway focuses on meeting basic needs. Our species’ nest evolved to meet the basic needs of children. Evolved nest components include soothing perinatal experience, extensive on-request breastfeeding and affectionate touch, allo-mothers who provide responsive care and a welcoming climate, self-directed social play in the natural world which develops nature connection, and routine healing practices. Breastfeeding meets multiple nest components. Evolved Nest components are particularly important in the first few years of life when a child’s neurobiology is being shaped towards a wellness-promoting trajectory of health and sociality, or trauma-inducing trajectory of ill health and self-absorption. Evolved Nest provision is an ethical imperative.
• Objectives: 
  • Participants will learn the differences between the current trauma-promoting pathway of society with the wellness-promoting pathway of our ancestors.
  • Participants will be able to list the nine ancestral caregiving practices of the Evolved Nest.
  • Participants will understand several ways the evolved nest supports lactation practice.

  • Participants will understand that the ethical care of babies requires the Evolved Nest.

Presentation 2: Ethical Challenges Relating To Medication Use During Breastfeeding (90 Minutes)

• Description
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women are often excluded from trials related to the drug development process. Subsequently, when clinicians need to prescribe medications during lactation, they do this off-label, often without evidence or guidance regarding optimal dosing or treatment recommendations. This presentation will explore the ethical challenges related to medication use during lactation and discuss the importance of shared-decision making when working with breastfeeding families

• Objectives:
  • Understand the implications of excluding women from clinical trials.
  • Be familiar with the ethical challenges relevant to medication use during lactation.
  • Use a shared decision-making approach when working with breastfeeding families.

Presentation 3: Ethical Issues in Milk Sharing and Milk Banking (90 Minutes)

• Speaker: Pauline Sakamoto, MS, RN, PHN

• Description: This session will explore the ethical issues of milk collection, priority use and distribution. Currently, there are limited regulations and cultural norms regarding human milk. Is it a human tissue or food? Is human milk a commodity? How does this relate to the treatment of women and their infants? What is the current status of access to human milk and equity of services? What does “safe milk” mean? This session is to explore the current condition of ethical issues surrounding human milk, “liquid gold”…the panacea for life for the most vulnerable in our society
