Virtual Support for Lactating Families

We are excited to start the year strong with an informative webinar by long time friend and supporter of San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition, Robin Kaplan M.Ed, IBCLC.

Since the onset of the pandemic, many lactation professionals quickly transitioned to virtual and telehealth visits to support families' lactation goals. There is still so much to learn on how to best provide education, demonstrations, and reassurance to clients through web and telehealth visits.

Overview: The need to provide virtual support for chest/breastfeeding families may have been ignited by the Covid-19 pandemic, but telehealth has proven to be an effective method to provide needed lactation support. The convenience and flexibility of meeting with families virtually removes barriers, such as location, childcare, and transportation. It also comes with its own set of challenges, such as difficulties reading body language, making connections with our clients, and assessing oral anatomy/milk transfer. Yet, with some intentional preparation, crafty detective skills, open-ended questions, and protocols for complicated situations, you may find that virtual consultations can truly meet the needs of your clients/patients.

Objectives:

Participants will be able to list 3 benefits of providing virtual appointments for lactating parents

Participants will be able to create a list of 5-10 open ended questions to ask clients during virtual consultations

Participants will be able to list 3 uses for recordings/videos prior/during/after digital consultations

Participants will be able to identify 3 strategies for troubleshooting and solving challenging situations during virtual consultations
